7 Surprising Reasons Why Young People Suffer From Muscle Pain?

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of young folks coming into my clinic with muscle pain and tension, especially around the upper back and neck, and often they’re also dealing with headaches. Some even have muscle tension in their hands and arms. I remember one young guy who came in after seeing many other doctors for his upper back pain. He had tried lots of medications, but nothing really worked for long. He had been dealing with this pain for about eight months. After checking him out, I suggested some medicines and a plan to get trigger point injections in the future. But then he asked me something that really got me thinking: “What’s causing all this pain?”

Seven reasons

I want to share some reasons why young people might be facing these kinds of pain issues.

Too Much Screen Time – If I had to pick one major cause, it would be the amount of time spent staring at mobile phones. Our necks aren’t designed to bend and twist into all sorts of shapes just to look at a screen. I’ve seen folks talking on their phones while driving or even lying in bed, which just isn’t good for your back or neck. Trying to do too many things at once, like scrolling through social media while doing chores, can also lead to pain. Cutting down on screen time could really help.

Not Enough Sleep – Getting 7-8 hours of solid sleep every night is crucial. Sleep is when your body heals from all the stress of the day. But lots of young people stay up late watching TV or on their laptops and phones, which cuts into their rest time.

Sitting Too Much – Our bodies haven’t evolved that much from our caveman days; they’re still built to move. Without regular exercise, like walking, running, or swimming (which is excellent for muscle pain), our muscles can weaken. Just 15-30 minutes a day can make a big difference.

Work Environment – Sometimes, the pain is simply due to where and how you work. Paying attention to your posture, especially if you use a laptop, can prevent a lot of pain. Make sure you’re sitting comfortably, with your screen at eye level to avoid bending your neck awkwardly.

Less common reasons

Acidity – Surprisingly, issues like acid reflux or ulcers can lead to neck pain. Researches have been studying the gut brain axis and have noted that the many of the chronic diseases that we suffer from are due to the ‘food we eat.’ Bad eating habits among young people can cause acidity, and treating this can often relieve the pain.

Hormonal Imbalances – Changes in hormones, especially during adolescence, or conditions like hypothyroidism can be behind the pain some young people feel.

Vitamin Deficiencies – Many of us don’t get enough Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D, thanks to our lifestyles and diets. If you’re in pain in various parts of your body, it’s worth getting these levels checked.

Do any of these reasons resonate with you for the pain you’re experiencing? Are there other reasons you think I might have missed? Let’s chat in the comments below.
